Very few women welcome the news that their husbands have planned a surfing trip to the Maldives and will be gone for a couple of weeks, but Belinda Metham saw it as an opportunity. Coinciding with the start of the Golf Link Cup, Bruce’s surf trip was the perfect excuse for Belinda to get out and spend plenty of time on the fairways at Cronulla Golf Club.

Belinda jumped to third on the overall leaderboard and was the leading female golfer by a massive 16,402 points after posting 34 Stableford points on Wednesday to take her tally to 66,423 Golf Link Cup points, thanks largely to the five games she was able to play in the space of eight days.

“My husband has just been away for two weeks so I’ve had a glut of golf but normally I just play Wednesdays and Fridays,” Belinda said. “But I was home alone so all I could do was play golf.”

The beauty of Belinda’s performances to date are that her best score has been 37 Stableford points, which she has achieved twice. It’s seen her handicap come in from 24 to 22 but puts paid somewhat to the theory that you need 40-plus Stableford points to make a move on the Golf Link Cup leaderboard.

“I’ve been watching the leaderboard and it’s very exciting,” she said. “I’d gone from 12th overnight to third this morning. I haven’t had brilliant scores at all and I don’t really understand how it all happens but now I just have to try and keep it going.

“It’s very exciting, and this is only week one!”

Although she managed her first ever hole-in-one back in May at Cronulla’s closing hole, the 149-metre par-3 18th, Belinda said that her confidence had in fact taken a battering over the past few months.

“I’ve hit a bit of a good patch, that’s all,” she said. “Golf comes and goes and I was having a horror run for about four months where I had all these opportunities to score well and I was shanking all these balls, it was terrible. But now I’m getting over that.”

All Belinda needs now is for Bruce to plan another surf trip with the boys so she can get a few more rounds in.
