Win or No Win, No Worries for Garry
If you get upset about playing badly then you’re doing it all wrong, says Genesis Golf Link Cup Week 9 B Grade winner Garry Christian.
Garry posted one of his best scores ever in the Monthly Medal at his home club of Byron Bay last week, a 78 that equated to nett 62 and 45 stableford points but, more importantly, perhaps signalled the light at the end of a long tunnel of poor play.
“It’s golf so anything can happen but I played okay the week before as well so hopefully it’s the turnaround I’ve been waiting for,” he says.
“It’s just been terrible for the last couple of years. I don’t know why but I just seem to have lost my game."
“But I don’t let it worry me. The thing about golf is that there’s always next week and I always look forward to next week no matter what.”
Garry came to the game later than most, first picking up a club at 35, but he was immediately hooked.
A naturally competitive type the challenge appealed to him and in his first 12 months of playing he went from a handicap of 22 to 12.
“And that’s about where I stayed up until the last couple of years,” he says.
“I’ve been down to 10 a few times but never managed to get to single figures, not even for a week"
He says the key to his good score last week was his chipping and putting. Always a strength, he was particularly productive around the greens in Week 9.
“My driving was still horrible but perhaps not quite as wide as it sometimes is,” he says.
“I tend to chip and putt well most of the time but I was particularly good that day and I think that was the difference really.
“Even then, I still had three double bogeys so it could have been even better!”
For his excellent effort Garry receives a dozen Titleist Tour Soft golf balls.
